The GearKnob wiki was created in February 2022 by a Top Gear lost media historian named AlexGRFan97, better known online as AlexTGRF or GearknobAlex.

The main premise of the wiki was to provide a complete encyclopedia of motoring programmes to be preserved from being lost to time, with some rules placed in, to avoid the wiki having to document programmes that don't relate to Top Gear in any way, shape or form.

Unfortunately, abandonment and lack of interest led to the wiki being left gathering dust. And on the 29th of March 2025, the wiki was closed indefinitely for possible future renovations related to the website.
