There was some controversy<ref>[http://www.magforum.com/car.htm Magforum - Car Magazines.]</ref> over the magazine's launch, with some perceiving that the BBC was using Redwood Publishing for free advertising. After the success of similarly-launched ''Good Food'' and ''Gardener's World'' magazines, each themed off of programmes broadcast by the BBC, ''Top Gear'' would quickly become Redwood's biggest campaign in the weeks leading up to the first issue's release. It was expected that much of the magazine's readership would be attracted through the ongoing ''[[Top Gear (1977 TV series)|Top Gear]]'' television programme.
