The fourth series of Top Gear premiered in the United Kingdom on the 9th May, 2004, and concluded on the 1st August, 2004, after a run of 10 episodes. The series' main host was Jeremy Clarkson, and he was accompanied by Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig as co-presenters. The series was produced at Television Centre in Wood Lane, London, and aired on BBC Two in a 60-minute studio format. Series 4 attracted an average viewership rating of 3.48 million viewers per episode, with a peak of 4.02 million viewers for Episode 9, and a low of 3.19 million viewers for Episode 6.
Highlights from this series include the introduction of two new film types following the success of the three-car test from the year prior; the epic race format, debuting in the series premiere, and the Cheap Car Challenge, debuting in Episode 3. Both of these concepts were the brainchild of series producer Richard Porter and defined Top Gear for the next several years.
